Proximity Productions initiated the Durance of Hate Tours, with the aim to set a touring culture for bands based in India and little known bands from other countries. The first edition featured bands like High Frequency from New Delhi and Trinergic from Mumbai while the second edition promises to be bigger than ever, so you know you can’t miss it!

This tour is also a debut tour for the three bands Darkrypt, Killchain, and Carnage InC, who released their debut albums sometime last year. On speaking to founder Harsha Vardhan about doing a tour for the bands, he said, “The prime motive was to go ahead do a complete DIY tour which started with Trinergic and High Frequency last year. It's a different experience altogether as the bands have been very cooperative!"

We are stoked to see the second edition and to see this line up play live. Harsha Vardhan filled us in on how it all came together, said, “Durance of Hate Tour's second edition was started earlier this year when Vineet from Killchain called me up with this idea. It made sense to lock in these three bands because they have one album under their belt from their recent catalogue.” And we agree, that’s helluva metal to see!
Reported as seen on social media.

Last night, American progressive band Intronaut put up a lengthy post on social media (Facebook) claiming Orka Networks artist manager, founder and promoter Renu McGarry still owes the band their performance fee from their show at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Read the post here:
This stirred up a lot of comments claiming the Deccan Rock organizer Orka Networks owes a number of people money, in lakhs of Indian rupees. Here are some comment shots from Intronaut's post.
This controversy began when the tour of French metallers Gorod got cancelled due to reasons we're not sure of, but certainly involved money. The band made this post at first, still unaware of the situation and if they were flying into India or not the next day.

Orka Networks put up a statement, but was later removed after it was shared by the band on their page. That led to this.

Solven Agency, who were organizing Morbidity Tour with Gorod and UK metal band Meta-stasis (who is managed by Renu), were also booking bands for their upcoming festival Krossover Konnections, that is to host two big metal headliners. The gig has been postponed and there seems to be an issue related to this event too.

Meanwhile, people are arguing with Orka Networks on a post for a refund for the Gorod gigs that got canned.

Little is known on the total figure people claim is owed to them by Orka Networks collectively, but we hope to get an official statement so things are cleared once and for all.
Sunny and Vinay were a force to be reckoned with. Randy Blythe walked up to them from our table after the Lamb of God show at Clarks Exotica (Bangalore) in 2012. Bhayanak Maut had also played the show and I remember Randy telling them, "I've been around the world, and it's rare to see a really good vocal duo like you guys. Keep it going!"

Something to surely be proud of. From a band who started off with a few Lamb of God covers back in the Razz days, to becoming something so epic and creating art that people (like me) fell in love with, these guys were true artists. If you were there for their first album launch at Hard Rock Cafe Worli (Mumbai), which I think was one of Sunny's first few shows with the band, you would have seen the madness they unleashed that day. It was my first BM gig, the first time a metal band played a show at HRC in India ever, and my mom was there too!
From then on, the band just took the country by storm, playing packed shows, stirring moshpits in every venue, and just being brutal as fuck, to put it simply. Bhayanak Maut then released a masterpiece titled 'Man', their second full length album along with a digital handbook with short stories pertaining to each of their songs. Grotesque and horrific would not suffice to describe the extremity of these stories. This blog is only to give you a slight idea of what I'm saying. And I urge you even today to please get your hands on this album and book to really experience it, with lyrics.

Bhayanak Maut vocalists Sunneith Revankar and Vinay Venkatesh revealed earlier today on their social media that both members would be leaving the band, playing their last show at Bacardi NH7 Weekender Meghalaya this weekend. Here's Sunny's FB post:
I loved Bhayanak Maut from the depths of my metal heart. I bought the first ever t-shirt print, album, wallet, poster, and raved in the front row for every gig I could be at. Shared the stage with them when I played with Chronic Phobia a few times. Sunny and Vinay gave back to the crowd more than double of the energy we gave them. As a duo, they were next level. I've even had the good fortune of being on stage singing to a couple of songs with them at B69, so I'm not taking this very well.

But I am happy they gave us what they did. Brutal lyrics and spine chilling stories.

Let's give them our best at Weekender. Once again, thank you. This was perfect, but time for change I guess.

Listen to some music and thank them for being a part of the band.
Great news for guitar players looking to improve their playing skills and getting spanking with technique! Mattias IA Eklundh's Freak Guitar Camp makes a second visit outside the Swedish woods and into the marshlands (wut) in India, but not quite! :P

The good men at 4/4 Entertainment and Guitar Garage Inc. have decided to host Freak Guitar Camp - India's second edition in February 2018. What's more? The camp will be a beautiful, intimate experience as it is every year. The venue for this year's camp will be different - nestled in the serene woods of Kamshet beside lake Vadivali. Here's the promo for you:

What is Freak Guitar Camp? It is a week-long guitar camp conducted by musician and educator Mattias Eklundh where guitar players from all over the world gather in the woods near Gothenburg and guitar players get to learn advanced guitar playing techniques, composition skills, and much more. The camp could also help students in bridging the divide between Carnatic and Western music on the guitar, as Mattias takes the konokol very seriously! The concept of Freak Guitar Camp was conceived, mothered and raised by the Viking guitar legend himself.

Freak Guitar Camp in INDIA will be a 6 day affair where students are tucked away in a lakeside paradise with their guitars and Matthias. This is the only location outside Sweden where the camp is conducted.

What you need to know for this year's camp:
The camp will cater to 30 students (maximum) who will sign up for the camp via online and one to one registration. The registration fee is inclusive of food, accommodation, pick ups and drops from specific locations in Calmshet / Lonavala, as well as the fee for attending the camp. The students are required to carry their own guitars, FX units and headphones. For more details and registering to the camp, visit the event on Insider.

Check this beautiful drone video of the campsite here:

To know what students who've visited the camp before have to say, visit my previous article on Freak Guitar Camp India 2014.

Inviting guitar players from in and around India to register for the camp! Trust me, it's madness. I visited the camp as part of my job at BAJAAO in 2014 for content and videos, so I got to live with Mattias and the campers for a good 3-4 days. I learned so much by just sitting at the back of the class for hours and singing to what Mattias was teaching the campers. He is probably the most fun music teacher and instructor I have ever seen. I've cued in a part you need to see that I recorded of Twinkle Twinkle little star! Love this guy.
About Mattias:
Mattias is known as the Guru who imparts infinite knowledge to hardworking guitar enthusiasts from across the planet and the Guru has been successfully executing this at his camps. After years of learning, knowledge sharing and patience Mattias will now bring down the Freak Guitar Camp from Sweden to India. Matthias has always had a soft corner towards India, Indian music and Indian musicians. This time he will share his bit with us in our very own country.

I'll mostly see you guys there again this year haha! New job scenes :D
Bacardi NH7 Weekender will once again, after quite sometime, be celebrating metal at Weekenders across India this year. With 2 main Weekenders at Meghalaya and Pune, and around 6 Weekender Express shows (one day concerts), they're bringing down some exciting artists besides the metal bands playing too!

Let's take a quick look at the international and Indian metal bands playing Weekender this year.

1. The Dillinger Escape Plan
One of the bands in the lineup on their last world tour, the other being Textures. You would know the band for their legendary stage antics involving burning shit onstage, stage truss climbing and more. Not sure if they're up to it anymore but it'll be fun watching them live for sure.
Where: Pune

2. Textures
They've been here over and over, probably played more shows in India than some Indian bands :P (exaggeration intended) but yes, they're back because they won't be after this gig. But you've gotta fucking love Textures for the prog and tech they've brought into life with sexy albums like Silhouettes and Drawing Circles.
Bloodywood has been rocking all your Bollywood and English pop songs with brutal, and some slightly stunning metal versions! Yes, they've not been around for too long, but in their little time they've managed to turn quite a few heads and have them people pushing play for a good laugh. Mind you, they're doing a kickass job with quality, and this is not your regular parody band.

I thought of having a little chat with them to see what they're up to. Who are they? Bloodywood is Karan Katiyar and Jayant Bhadula. Here's Jayant with some answers:

1. Why? Deets.
JB: Why? Well, it all started with me and Karan goofing around but the positive reception made us think about what we do. We realised that this indeed is a good way to get attention and when the time is right, we will drop our originals!

Bloodywood: Jayant Bhadula and Karan Katiyar

2. It isn't very uncommon to do covers of pop songs in a metal way, but something about Bollywood did spark this. What was so inspiring about our childhood?
JB: Just how some Bollywood music sounded (bad, mostly) make us think, 'You know what, this could sound way better' and that's literally all it took to push us into doing this.

3. Your favourite cuisine / dish?
JB: Chole bhature all the way

4. Here's an obvious question you're expecting me to ask - late Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington didn't like your cover of Heavy because yes we know it wasn't heavy at all, but what were your first thoughts when you saw Chester's 'Sucks ass' tweet?
JB: We were sort of expecting this :P

5. Which song really did it for you guys in terms of viewership so far?
JB: 'PPAP metal Version' - And we weren't expecting it to go that big! I mean the numbers were huge; 4 million + views on Facebook. Then some page ripped the video and even they got 4 million views and then some dude uploaded it on YouTube where it got somewhere around 180k+ views, plus a few cover versions to add to it. The feeling is something we can not describe in just words.

6. What other music / bands are you two with currently?
JB: I'm currently working with The Cosmic Truth and Bloodywood.
Karan works with The snake charmer alongside Bloodywood and I'm the spot dada at Archy's shoots! :P
7. Lots of effort into production, composition and all else we see. How are you spending so much time on this, or is it paying back? Patreon and other platforms working out for you?
JB: This is what we do for a living so all our time goes into this. Our main sources of income are Patreon and Spotify. We aren't earning enough yet to sustain ourselves completely off this but with enough support, we are confident we will be able to pull it off.
American metal band Veil of Maya will be making their debut in India in January 2018. According to an announcement on entertainment company Bohemian Live's social media, the band will be playing a four-city tour from 10th - 14th January 2018. The cities include New Delhi, Chennai (IITM Saarang to be confirmed), Guwahati and Mumbai.

Terrific news! Dj0ntboys, jump! I've been waiting to watch Veil of Maya since I was a kid, hoping I'd one day successfully host an Indian edition of Euroblast and get them down but hey, I don't need to do that anymore because fuck, have you seen the amount of international acts coming down to India in the next 4 months!? Out of that 3 of them have played Euroblast before! Insane scenes.

Watch Veil of Maya in your city, dates below:

Promoters Bohemian Live have produced Cultfest in the past, bringing down death metal giants Cannibal Corpse and deathcore band Suicide Silence to India in 2015. On speaking to co-founder Amarjeet Singha about doing a tour over a one-day concert, he said, "We had never done an India tour before so we wanted to do that. Also, it makes better financial sense than doing a one off show. I guess this is the only way forward (3-4 city tours at least) where it makes sense to both band and promoter."

Our promoters are as geared up as all of you. Team member Suhas Vk, when asked about how he's feeling, said, "I'm very excited for this gig! I've been a huge fan of the band even more since Matriarch and I'm looking forward to their next release 'False Idol' due this 20/10." Amarjeet added, "Really excited to have a band like Veil OF Maya onboard for our first tour, and it will definitely be a treat for the Indian modern metal fans!"

Tickets for the event have already been announced along with links for each city except Chennai. The early bird tickets for Antisocial dates (Delhi and Mumbai) are priced at INR 1299 and the Guwahati ticket at INR 999.
I remember when I was programming metal nights at Hard Rock Cafe Hyderabad and I contacted Abbas for Skrypt. However the band was unavailable and he introduced me to his new band 'Godless'. This was to be their first show and man, it was insane!

This is probably one band that has come so far so fast, and they've been bringing down every venue they play at. They always leave people either moshing or astonished, especially for those who are watching them for the first time.

I did an interview with the band to see what's going on, s'appening mayyn. Read the whole interview below.

1. Favourite food?
Ravi: Andhra meals
Abbas: Burgers with lots of beef, bacon and cheese
Rohit: Andhra meals
Kaushal: Beef steak
Aniketh: Andhra meals

2. What started off for you guys at Hard Rock Cafe metal nights is now you opening for Behemoth at Deccan Rock! How does it feel to have travelled so far so fast?
It feels fucking great to open for Behemoth. Ever since we started off as a band, we just focused on getting everything right with regard to our live sound, lights, tightness, showmanship, songwriting and the EP release. We’ve worked really hard and we’re quite happy with how things have turned out for us. We’d like to thank all the organisers we’ve worked with. This is only the beginning and there is no slowing down for us.

3. Give us a little history on how you guys got together.
Our bassist Abbas and guitarist Ravi, who both were from Skrypt, were looking to form a band that was nothing but loud, relentless and aggressive. Abbas had already written Ossuary and recruited Aniketh Yadav from slam/brutal death metal band Shock Therapy on drums and Rohit Nair on guitars as well.

We wrote Infest and kept a lookout for vocalists. We thought finding a permanent vocalist would be better that way since people would get to listen to us and get a feel of what our direction would be like. So, when Abbas visited New Zealand in early 2015, he recorded the demo featuring Sean O'Kane Connolly (Ex-In Dread Response) on guest vocals. After a few jams with other vocalists, we got in touch with Kaushal from Bangalore (Orchid, Eccentric Pendulum, Ironic Reversal) since the guys from Eccentric Pendulum are close friends. With him, our lineup was complete and there has been no looking back since.

4. How did you get Joe Haley of Psycroptic to feature on the song Ossuary?
We’re all really big fans of Psycroptic and Joe’s playing. Since he was already mixing our EP and mentioned to us that he really dug the music, we thought there’s no harm in asking him to lay down a solo. He was cool with it and it just blew us away when he sent us the track.

5. How was your experience playing at the Wacken Metal Battle finals this year?
It was really great. We got to play for a new audience. We were quite happy with the response. Congratulations to our buddies in Elemental on their win!

6. What has the band been going of late? (gigs, recording, etc.)
We’ve just been gigging and been promoting our debut EP Centuries of Decadence which we released this year in May. The response has been pretty fucking great. We’ve got a couple of shows lined up and we’re also currently writing some new material already. We’ll probably get to recording it somewhere during the end of the year.

7. Should we expect something coming our way from you any time soon?
Definitely more merch. And maybe a single.

8. Your favourite international bands.
Bolt Thrower, Slayer, Napalm Death, Obituary, Aborted, Pestilence, Autopsy, Gorguts, Cryptopsy, Cattle Decapitation, Terrorizer, Repulsion, Cannibal Corpse, Psycroptic, Decapitated, Vader, Morbid Angel, The Haunted, Meshuggah, Death, Gorod, Judas Priest, The Faceless, Beyond Creation, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, Defeated Sanity, Dying Fetus, Gorgasm

9. Collectively, your favourite Indian bands.
Devoid, Third Sovereign, Gutslit, Shepherd, Eccentric Pendulum, Amogh Symphony, Infernal Wrath, Undying Inc., Nihilus

10. A message for all the fans out there!
We’d like to thank everyone who’ve come for our shows, picked up our CDs & merchandise and supported us. See you at Deccan Rock 2016 on the 24th of September where we open for the mighty Behemoth alongside a bunch of killer bands! Cheers!
This may be very exciting news for many of you.

Mumbai band Goddess Gagged returns after a hiatus of over a year. The band will be kicking things off again with the 2 Stroke Tour, courtesy Mr. Sarmaaah of BlueTree, who has been doing a fantastic job in the Indie scene over the past 2-3 months.

The band is scheduled to play a total of 7 cities this August-September. Gloomy weather and indoor gigs are a very sexual thing in general. GG will be playing with a bunch of bands from the respective touring cities like What Escapes Me, Dossers Urge, Lucid Recess, Dark Carnage, Kraken, Soul Inclination, Tails on Fire, Diarchy, Gumbal and Ferry Tales.
It's a pleasure to know this guy. He takes care of a record label, a webzine, and does PR almost single-handedly. He is also not very good at keeping umbrellas, but he's a genius in his own right. Kunal Choksi, hailing from the infernal depths of Versova is the man behind Transcending Obscurity, one of the world's premier underground music labels for extreme music. Transcending Obscurity was recently listed as one of the 'Top 5 Underground Labels you need to check out right now' by Metal Injection.

I've done this small interview with Chokslam to get some perspective on how it is to be the owner of an extreme metal label operating across the globe from India, and what he's up to lately.

Q. What is your favourite cuisine/dish of all time?
Hi! Thanks a ton for taking out the time to do this interview Pratika! It's probably pizza - a cliched answer, I know, but it's so good and something that I actually look forward to! Since you've asked, the best (veg particularly) pizzas I've had are from Alfredos (Pizza Mediterranea) and Joey's Pizza (devilishly good)! I also enjoy having pav bhaji and well made pastas.

Q. We know it's difficult to actually pull all of this off, considering it's you and probably just a couple of more people. How do you do what you do? And why?
It's certainly difficult, especially when you're trying to do this in a legit way and not by doing it as some kind of part time hobby. My beginnings were quite humble where I actually stood at stalls with no lighting to sell CDs from my own collection in the last decade, simply because no one was doing this kind of thing earlier. In all modesty, I probably was one of the first to start this concept of selling international CDs (even merch) at stalls at shows here. No one sees the struggle but everyone wants to be part of the glory. At B69, I even ended up giving people entries by stamping their wrists and collecting their ticket money and also taking care of the bands' instruments rather than selling my stuff there haha. So yeah, it's been frustrating and I never really envisioned such an outcome for what I was doing. I just kept at it, tried to make it better, and yes, work very, very hard.

Why? It's because no one was doing what I was doing. It stems from the fact that no one was doing anything about the music when I got back into the local scene and attended the first comeback edition of Deathfest around 2011 or something. There were so many albums out but all of them were unheard of, and none of them had any distribution of any kind. With my international experience (Diabolical Conquest Records circa 2009), I knew they needed support so I started doing distribution for absolutely free and even paid for the courier and packaging out of my pocket. After that I started the Indian leg of the label. And then it's history as they say it and thankfully, it's grown to be a somewhat synonymous name in the scene here (at least). There were of course many detractors and my efforts were thwarted by many, but I did what I had to do. It is enough? Of course not. It's barely self-sustaining but I hope with better international exposure it will be in the next year or two.

Q. I've heard you're now into design and illustration. Can you tell us which bands you've worked with so far?
I was always into art and was obsessed with all of it, but because of my engineering studies and business management and stuff, never got around to exploring it. It was after my sister passed away, that I enrolled in a FX School that taught all of this, just to get out of depression or cope with it. I don't have a lot of time to practice but I must say that I've learnt a lot and did about a dozen layouts for bands since a year or so from that period. I've so far done artworks for three of them - 1) Toxoid, 2) Dormant Inferno (India) / Dionysus (Pakistan) 3) Diabolus Arcanium (even the logo for this one). I'm currently working on an album artwork for the heavy metal band Knight; the album is called 'The Ventriloquist'. It's difficult but I have no qualms admitting that I'm new and have yet to improve.

Q. Transcending Obscurity also has a proper webzine. How do you manage your time with a label, active reviews and articles?
It's a real pain, to be honest. Thankfully I've found a good deputy editor in Shrivatsan (an old and loyal friend) and I've also assigned Chris Dahlberg from US to do premieres and such stuff. It's still a recent development but they're doing more than I can now in this aspect and for that I'm immensely grateful to them. Mind you, I have been writing since 2004 and it's been over a decade now and I'm still at it. The very intention was to highlight good music and I was always a keen listener from the start. So the foundation of Transcending Obscurity was always to promote good music out there and help spread the word - without ever relying on ads, now or ever, for any monetary benefits at all.

Q. How many bands have you currently signed onto TO and since when?
I'm more interested in the international bands now, to be honest, because I'm eager to spread my wings and expose more international metal fans to our music. Unless and until the fan base doesn't increase, we'll just be catering to the same audience and that's not good. But then there are much bigger and much more established labels out there so it's always a struggle to convince bands to work with you on an international level. With that said, the Indian bands happen to be the backbone of Transcending Obscurity and I've done my best to support them despite their scepticism and sometimes lack of support. I think overall I have 50+ bands working with me that are actively working on new music that I can put out. Sometimes I'm demotivated, sometimes I'm eager, but more or less, I'm happy to say that it's all worked out for the better. I'm getting mentally tired but there's much to do still...

Q. Tell us about what you did before you began TO.. Some details on Diabolical Conquest maybe?
I was just very underground. I was a critic and a harsh one at that, one that wasn't easily pleased. But life taught me lessons and I thought that my opinions aren't really 'helping' anyone. Yes, it allows people to make well-informed purchases but that wasn't enough. It was then that I decided to start a record label and my first signing was of the Australian band The Dead, which was hugely successful at the point of time. Back then, in the last decade, hardly any bands from our country were recording music so I couldn't do much for them.

But a few years later, when new bands sprang up like mushrooms and there was no real label to support them, I started a sub-label and simultaneously changed the name to Transcending Obscurity to reflect a better purpose. I was never an atheist, let alone 'satanic', but perhaps that name suggested that, but with 'Transcending Obscurity', the approach is different and more inclined to help everyone as far as possible. Some are deserving, some not so much, but at least their music has remained alive in a sense through our efforts. Bands did more than float 'demos' online on Mediafire links - here they got a professional release, reviews, acclaim, and more often than not, merch options. Even now some of the earliest albums we put out are at least recorded for posterity and available legally via the digital medium (if not physical).

Q. Whose releases are you busy with at the moment, and what should we look out for in the next few months?
Releases from the ambitious Thane/Mumbai based death metal band Darkrypt and consecutively the batshit insane grindcore band from Bangalore Grossty are up next. There are a couple of other unannounced but committed Indian releases scheduled too but I'm not sure whether or not they'll be out this year. That's because simultaneously there are much bigger releases also scheduled and I don't want a clash of sorts to happen. We're talking about Mark Riddick's band Fetid Zombie, UK legends Warlord UK (for their classic album reissue via Transcending Obscurity Classics sub-label), the H.P. Lovecraft-influenced band from Netherlands called SwampCult, and last but not the least, the mighty Rudra. I'm also excited about an unannounced international grind band and also a Finnish death/black metal band. I wish my schedule wasn't so tight but I'm coping with it and trying my best to justify them all, especially with regards to thorough international promotion and innovative packaging.

Q. We heard you could be batman. How do you manage both lives?
That's only a rumour. I don't want my enemies to come into my batcave and do something to Alfred or worse, steal my precious batmobile.

Q. Your honest opinion on the future of all of this you are involved in? I think it's gonna work out eventually if we all keep at it. What are your thoughts?
Well, so far so good. I'm extremely thankful to all those bands, fans, writers and my well-wishers for providing their support and I can only strive to not let them down. I'm putting in a great deal of effort and it drains my health (as well as my bank account lol) but I'm positive that in another two years, things should be on track, more or less. It's doing things significantly on an international level that remains elusive but that's my main goal. And of course, to somehow conjure up some extra time magically to continue my practice of playing guitar as well as drums, in an attempt to start my own band and record music sometime in the future. The standards are really, really high but I wouldn't have it any other way. Many thanks once again for your interest in my activities and I'm glad to have your support in all of this, Pratika. Godspeed!
Bhopali four-piece death metal band Elemental will be playing in Germany after winning the prestigious Wacken Metal Battle India competition finals in Bengaluru on Saturday, 9th July. They will be visiting Wacken Open Air in Germany, one of the biggest heavy metal music festival in the world held from 4th - 6th August 2016.

Elemental was the only band from central India to travel to Bengaluru and play against finalists from different parts of the country including Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Guwahati, and more. There were no eliminations held in Bhopal, so the band had to travel to Mumbai to compete. The band landed up in the finals after the Mumbai leg of the competition got cancelled.
After playing against bands like Godless, Gaia’s Throne, Vidyut, etc., Elemental were announced winners of the final round held at Vapour in Bengaluru just one day before Bangalore Open Air. Started in India by Salman U Syed, the Wacken Metal Battle is a competition in association with the international festival Wacken Open Air in Germany, where bands from across the country compete and the winner gets a chance to play against national finalists from around 30 other countries worldwide.

“This is a huge opportunity for us! We want to make a mark and make India shine.” said the band’s vocalist Anchal Bhargava.

Big Indian metal music bands like Eccentric Pendulum, Zygnema, Plague Throat and more have played at the Wacken Metal Battle finals in the past. The Department of Arts and Culture in Meghalaya supported Shillong’s death metal band Plague Throat last year, so they could compete in the international finale.

The Wacken Metal Battle has been in India for the past five years along with the festival Bangalore Open Air that has seen many international performances in the country since the first edition. Big heavy metal music bands like Kreator, Vader, Animals as Leaders and more visited the festival in the past few years.

This is the first time a band from an unexpected city has made it so big. Salman U Syed, organizer of the Wacken Metal Battle and Bangalore Open Air said, " I never expected a band from Bhopal to win this competition. It looks like the metal music community has also reached the smaller cities! Hope the band wins this year at Wacken."

We wish Elemental all the best and I'm personally extremely proud of them. Wave that Indian flag, motherfuckers!!
About Elemental:
Elemental is a four-piece Bhopali death metal band from India. The band was founded in September 2012 by members Anchal Bhargava on vocals, Aman 'Ricky' Sharma on guitars and Divyaraj Bhatnagar on drums. Their blend of straight-up, no nonsense death metal makes them one of India's finest exports in this genre. The band will be supporting Polish metal giants Behemoth in India this September. They have headlined college festivals, won over 40 competitions, and played at big music festivals like BIG69, Shillong metal rock, toured with death metallers IIIrd Sovereign and Indian grind pioneers Gutslit, and much more.
The band's music general revolves around fighting against corruption, racism, violence and man-made disasters, uplifting the weak and underprivileged. Disturbed by the environs of central India, Elemental's debut album 'Creation of the Damned' is the voice of those who suffered in the tragic Bhopal gas tragedy a few decades ago. Be assured to be in for a treat.

About Wacken Open Air:
Wacken Open Air (W:O:A) is a summer open-air heavy metal music festival. It takes place annually in the small village of Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany. With 80,000 festival visitors, and including personnel a total of roughly 86,000 attendees in 2011, it attracts various kinds of metal and hard rock music fans.
The festival was first held in 1990 as a small event for local German bands. W:O:A is usually held at the beginning of August and lasts now four days. It is currently considered the biggest heavy metal festival in the world. The festival ends traditionally on the first Sunday of August and on Monday 0:00 o'clock, ticket sales open for the next year. Remarkably, all 75,000 tickets were sold out within 43 hours in 2014, within 12 hours in 2015 and 23 hours in 2016, despite the fact that the lineup (with the exception of rumors or headliners) had not been announced, which is probably unique for a music festival of any kind.
Songs are not ONLY about that one sexy riff (I like sexy riffs), just that one gut-pounding drum section (drummers <3) or that very innovative bass line the unknown dude came up with (I'm joking. I used to play bass and I am famous and fabulous :P )

There are great stories and some incredible thought given to songs. This thematic representation of concepts, based on our daily struggle, politics, war, fiction, fantasy and other things is one of the major reasons why this genre is so different from all else. Stories and lyrics in particular are crucial and extremely influential in the entire song-writing process. In short, know what the vocalist is saying.
Here's a collection of some Indian metal band's lyric videos. If you do know of any more, please let me know right away. I'll add them to the list.

Transcending Obscurity brings to you yet another promising gig. He is one of the few organizers trying to make gigs happen more often in Mumbai, the man behind the website, label and a hundred other cool properties, Mr. Kunal Choksi. Having included a great mix of bands from different parts of the country, I interviewed one of these bands, Trivandrum thrash metallers 'Chaos'. In an interview with Nikhil (guitar player), he talks about the band, the music scene in Trivandrum, their new merch, etc. Check it out!

Hello boys! Introduce yourselves!
Hello Pratika! We're Chaos :D

Favourite food?
JK should've answered this question. I'm not very particular about food as such (more of an enthusiast of beverages, so to speak), but JK is an absolute foodie! I think the list of things he enjoys devouring include, Chicken shawaya, chicken shwarma, Krispy Kreme Donuts (He might go a far as killing someone to get his hands on one), bacon beef burger with extra cheese and the list goes on and on! He even has this habit of finding interesting food joints everywhere and he'd make it a point that he drags us all repeatedly to such places until we're all fed up of it! So, if you're reading this, keep your food away from JK!

Not all of us out here are aware of when you began. Tell us, where did the power to start this band come from?
We started the band back in 2005 during our college days. There were just a handful of bands here in Trivandrum back then. They all had a clear sight of what they were trying to achieve, but unfortunately, most of them burned out over the past decade. Where did the power to start the band come from? I was always into this form of music from my school days and I used to play a bit of guitar as well. So, when I got into college, I wanted to form a band. Luckily I found someone with similar musical interests in JK and things just kicked off from there.

CHAOS

How's thrash in Thiruvanathapuram?
Thrash? Literally non-existent. However, Trivandrum or Kerala as such, has been hit hard right in the ball-sack by a phenomenon which can be referred to as 'the new wave of mallu rock', and what is this wave that I speak of? It all starts with a bunch of guys coming up with a Malayalam name for their band (If you're willing to use the term 'band' loosely). From there, it's pretty much a downward spiral involving pathetic attempts to get famous regionally overnight, so on and so forth. All jokes aside, there are a few good bands here and there but most of them are just trying to do what 'Avial' did and not getting anywhere even remotely close to Avial. There's even this new show which is aimed at rescuing the rock scene in Kerala, which has turned into a clown parade of mainstream media shitting all over the things that were once out of their area of interest. So yeah! This is what is happening over here.

What's been going on of late with Chaos? Tell me everything! (merch, releases, everything!)
We've just released the Blacklash tee which has been very well received. The stock ran out a lot quicker than we'd expected it to. Can't really thank Kunal enough for making that happen! Apart from that, we're putting the finishing touches on our next album, which we are planning on releasing sometime in 2015.

Which were the bands that inspired you to start playing metal? Which are those bands that you all collectively love?
We've been inspired by a lot of old 80s thrash. Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Anthrax etc. Pantera has a special place in my list because for me, Dimebag Darrel opened up a wide array of possibilities which has inspired me beyond comparison.

What gigs are you playing in the near or distant future?
We're all set to play in Mumbai this coming November at Catatonia fest. Apart from that, we don't have anything lined up.

Chronic Xorn, a Kolkata-based five-piece metal band are setting fire! The band recently got endorsed by ESP guitars through Furtados music. Last night, they released a lyric video for their latest single 'The Great Human Failure' (check below). I've also added them to the Metalsphere list of bands for bookings, so feel free to contact me in case you want to book them! There are more details in this little interview I did with them.

For everyone who doesn't know you, introduce yourselves :)
Hi! We are Chronic Xorn from Kolkata. The band was formed in 2008. We play a mix of melodic death and groove metal. We released our first EP in 2010 titled 'Death.Destruction.Sermon' and a full length album called 'From Mercy' in 2012.

Favourite food!
Bangalis are pretty renowned for being foodies and we are no exception to that. Just give us MEAT!

What is the mystery behind the force forming Chronic Xorn? (Simply, tell us a little history on the band!)
Well, the band was formed by Sunny, Tamaghna, Abhinav, Anindya and Jeet. However, over the years, we’ve had a lot of line up changes owing to job issues. The band was later joined by Angshuman, Suvam, Biswaroop and Sambit and that is our present lineup.

What's the metal scene in Kolkata like?
The metal scene in Kolkata is getting better with time. In 2008 there were around 20-30 people who used to come to gigs, but since 2011-12 we have seen 200-300 people on a regular basis coming for gigs. The college fests have opened up to metal bands these days which is a real good thing and to top it off, metal bands are getting money (although it’s not a lot, but it’s still a good thing) for playing at fests.

What bands have inspired you from the start?
We have a varied range of influences starting from Iron maiden and Metallica all the way to Dream Theater to All Shall Perish to Nile and Hate Eternal. It’s really hard to say specifically for every one of us.

You've released a lyric video for your song 'The Great Human Failure'. Why do a lyric video and what idea went behind this song? Is there going to be a concept album?
Well, basically we wanted to release a new single and instead of releasing an audio on Soundcloud we thought it’d be cool to do a lyric video with animation effects, it’s just that.
Yes, it is going to be a concept album and 'The Great Human Failure' is one of the tracks that will be present in that album. More details will be released soon from our camp!

Tell me what's in store for the band? (Gigs, releases, merchandise)
Yes! Well, we are playing on the 29th of September at Elysium 2014 in Kolkata and we have a few gigs lined up in October and November (mostly not in Kolkata). We have also done a cover of Stairway to Heaven which we could not include in the album due to copyright issues. We’ll upload that cover soon. Plus, we’ve got some more teasers from the album coming soon!
New merchandise will be released along with the new album!

A message to all your lovely fans and supporters.
It has been a wonderful experience playing for you guys for all these years. Thank you for your support! Stay tuned for more of our updates. Cheers!
Have you heard of Sound-Awake?
They've recently opened India's first store dedicated EXCLUSIVELY to selling merchandise by Indian bands and artists. What you need to know is that this is India's one-stop shop for merchandise made by Indian bands, a convenient platform for bands to get their merch selling in a proper store and one place for people keen on buying merchandise to do so in one go! Instead of the online ordering hassle, people in Bangalore can now just take their metro or rickshaw or whatever the fuck vehicle they own and shop for stuff they'd value buying.

Doesn't mom sometimes enter the house with these random t-shirts that say 'I <3 NY' telling you, "It'll look good on you, beta"? Well, it's time you went shopping with mommy and showed her the store she can pick stuff up from which won't lead to a facepalm frenzy.

CALLING ALL BANDS WHO WISH TO SELL THEIR MERCHANDISE AT THIS STORE! DETAILS BELOW!
Tell us something about Sound-Awake! (members, how old the company is, et al)
Sound-Awake (formed in January 2012) is a capsule with Fellow Artist Management, Downtown Gig Production and Booking. At Sound-Awake, we completely thrive on the DIY motto and believe in one single entity called music.
Sound-Awake is setting its foot forward as the fuel for the Artists in the country. Our team comprises of Sangeeth Ram (Founder/CEO), Rohan Thomas, Abdul Sathar, Preran Rai.

What is it that made you want to open a store dedicated exclusively to Indian bands/artists?
Keeping in mind the day to day struggles an Indian band/artist goes through when it comes to reach and recognition, The Sound-Awake store is doing its best. We have a wide array of merchandise on sale from fantastic and unique Indian bands/artists and wish for the list to keep growing.
Pepsi MTV Indies Live and The Stormbringer present The Stormfest Anniversary, this weekend in Pune! Here's an interview I've done with the organizer that's bringing to us one of the most kickass gigs in proximity on the 28th of September 2014. Man, this Pune scene is killing it. Name of organizer (come on come on tell us, don't hide!)
We’re collectively called The Stormbringer – Tushar Joshi, Utkarsh Golatkar, Kaushik Joshi & Aakanksha Rao

Favourite food
Tushar - Cinnabons
Utkarsh – Anything non veg. (including the jokes)
Kaushik Joshi - Dabeli (seriously)
Aakanksha Rao – Wada Pav

Which was the first gig you did in Pune?
Our first gig was 'The Stormfest' on 21st September 2013. We had Virion, Cruoris, Adamantium , Bleeding Edge, Cosmic Infusion and Gutslit. It was at this crappy banquet hall in Wakad but it was one mental gig! All the Pune bands gave a stellar performance and Gutslit & Cosmic Infusion killed the crowd.

What's special about this anniversary edition of Stormfest?
We've grown a lot over the last year and come a long way from an underground venue, low budget etc. to commercial, ambient venues and high-profile bands. We decided we need to get the best band in the current scene and couldn’t think of anyone else other than The Down Troddence who’ve recently won 8 awards at the Rolling Stone Metal Awards (2014). We’re also getting Providence who have gathered a lot of fans in Pune since the last time they were seen by Pune fans, so we’re really keen on having them both!

What was the initial idea behind organizing gigs?
I’ve (Tushar) been part of the Pune music scene since 2004 performing in a few bands, the likes of Campus Rock Idols and some Mixtape events, Yamaha Roxx etc., doing gigs on a regular basis. We had a lot of gigs until I left the country in 2008. I returned in 2013 hoping to perform again but only to find that there are only competitions and mall gigs where bands could perform with an exception of very few independent gigs. That was pathetic! Bands should not have to compete with each other and malls are no place for a band to perform. Moreover, the bands end up paying up to Rs. 1000 as registration fee just to get 15 minutes of crappy sound from a sound engineer whose forte is Indian festivals, playing to a crowd of Honey Singh & EDM lovers and at the end of it, bands get disappointed because they lose to a band that has been playing for years. They also get into a state of bitching about the other bands, which was really unhealthy for the scene as we’re all in this together and suffering equally. So I realized that something needs to be done about this and decided to get into organizing gigs.
Also, the idea behind doing gigs in Pune was that other organizers were bringing in bands from outside and the local bands were barely getting a stage to perform. I was also told by a very prominent independent event organizer that Pune bands aren’t good. I refused to accept that as we’ve always had some really great bands come out of the city in the past. Currently, in my opinion, we definitely have some amazing talent in the city that just needs to be nurtured and encouraged. However, if I’m being biased and if its true that they are in fact not worth giving a stage to perform, then unless they are given a chance with a fair setup where they can perform, they can’t be expected to improve. It was that simple. So I formed The Stormbringer as an initiative to promote the local bands/artists.

What genres have you been doing gigs in?
We’re involved with bands/artists right from Classical to Extreme Metal. We’re in it to promote independent music so we don’t segregate genres.

Besides this, what is it that you do for a living, or is this your only job?
I (Tushar) do this full time. Utkarsh is a vocalist. Kaushik works in Kirloskar's accounts department and Aakanksha works for AIESEC.

Do you play music?
I play bass, rhythm guitars (I’m really bad). Utkarsh is a vocalist for Chaoskampf and the only talented musician in the team. Kaushik and Aakanksha, both are professional bathroom singers.

What lies ahead for the Stormbringer!?
We’re planning a lot of things. Next step will be to move into other cities apart from Pune and improve the independent music scene there. So watch out people, THERE’S A STORM COMING OUT OF PUNE!! \m/
I've known Deb for a few years now, competing with Chronic Phobia at many gigs with Noiseware! He's one hell of a drummer! Check this long interview I've done with him. :)

Full name and age.
Gautam Deb and just turned 25.
I'm feeling extremely old already.

What is your favourite dish/cuisine?
Indian (home) food any day.

Kindly tell us about all your precious gear! (Sticks, cymbals, kit, skins, gear/bags)
I have a Mapex kit in Pune but will be upgrading it soon, and got a Roland TD 11k E- kit in Bombay. I've got 15 gorgeous cymbals from Soultone cymbals.
I'm currently in love with them. I've got a mix of dark and bright sets.
As for sticks, I use either a Vic Firth or Vater 5A/5B/7B.
All gig bags and practice pads are sorted, thanks to Alberto. He's a God's gift to all the musicians in Bombay.

How long have you been playing the drums?
I've been playing since nine years. I took drumming up seriously when I was in school in Pune and was very sure that this is what I am going to do.

What got you into playing drums?
Women/girls.
Then I realized there’s more to it….haha!

Have you learned to read music as well, or do you just play by ear?
I use a lethal combination of both.
I got myself into reading a couple of years back but then I developed my own style of reading, thanks to my school/teacher/college ….Noiseware.
I programme what I play so I get a midi chart and I use that chart as my reading sheets.
The advantage is that I can hear what I write and even slow down the tempo if I want to which I’m sure a piece of paper can't do, but then when I'm jamming, I just use my ear and try to create something and then take it to the midi charts.
Reading is an important aspect and helps understand time and every musician should at least know it if not use it.

Loud and pounding| soft and accurate| the normal drummer. What do you prefer?
Is this a sexpert question? haha…but anyway
It depends on what you are playing. Currently I freelance as a drummer and playing different genres needs different styles of playing. So, understanding the physics of dynamics is important.

What thought goes into the composing process?
This one is all about the ear. No amount of charts can help you make a good song unless you are Beethoven.
If it sounds good then it is good. For learning and refining, yes, charts would definitely help you.

What other music projects are you currently a part of?
Currently I’m writing an album with Noiseware (Metchul) and PMOC (Pinnochio's Moment of Clarity) which is sort of a post rock album.
Creatively I’m just involved with these two projects.
Last year I worked on an album with Reverrse polarity with Keshav Dhar producing it and it was a great learning experience for me.

Do you have a day job? What is it that you do?
Not really. I play the drums and I make a living out of it.
I also have a design firm so I switch temporarily during an off-season.
So yeah, two professions as of now but never ever a day fucking job.

Every whack and hit in the technical space seems to seamlessly fit into this drummer's spectrum! One of the tightest and best drummers in the Indian metal scene, Vibhas Venkatram of Eccentric Pendulum is the man behind the indispensable odd time signatures and grooves in this band! Here's a quick and crazy interview with this guy!

Full name and age.
Vibhas Venkatram, 27.

What is your favourite dish/cuisine?
Street food, Indian, Thai, Italian (Anything vegetarian)

Kindly tell us about all your precious gear! (Sticks, cymbals, kit, skins, gear/bags)
I have a basic GB&A 5-piece drumkit, Pearl Omar Hakim Signature snare drum, Tama Iron Cobra double pedals, Sabian B8 pro hi hats, Wuhan China cymbals (12" and 14"), Meinl HCS Splash cymbals (8" and 10"). I use Vic Firth 8D/85A sticks.

How long have you been playing the drums?
I've been drumming since August 2005.

What got you into playing drums?
Repeated playing of Slipknot's 'Iowa' and Linkin Park's 'Hybrid Theory'. A couple of friends wanted to jam and were looking for a drummer to perform at a college fest. I loved the experience and after that, it just turned into a serious hobby.

Have you learned to read music as well, or do you just play by ear?
Both. I prefer playing by ear unless there is an intricate drum beat/fill which I HAVE to play the way it is composed, in which case I refer the sheet music.

Loud and pounding | soft and accurate | the normal drummer. What do you prefer?
The dynamics depend on the type of music. I prefer varied dynamics (again, depends on the music)

What thought goes into the composing process?
A lot of thought. Heh. To be open minded, creative and coming up with parts that don't just mindlessly follow the guitar riffs. Smooth transition between parts of the song, a few good fills etc. Basicall,y to break the monotony in metal drumming (or try to!)

What other music projects are you currently a part of?
I'm trying to explore the non-metal side of music. I've been jamming with a bunch of amazing musicians and should be performing real soon.

Do you have a day job? What is it that you do?
I am a full-time musician. I teach, record and perform.

Your favorite musicians (Indian, other than EP members, of course)
Guitar: Tony Das, Pradeep Ramanathan, Anshuman Mishra, Sandesh Nagaraj.
Bass: Gurdip Singh Narang, Abbas Razvi.
Drums: Manu Krishnan, Abhinav Yogesh, Yadhunandan Nagaraj, Mithun Puthanaveetil
Vocals: Sylvester Pradeep, Bruce Lee Mani

Your favourite musicians (international)
Guitar: John McLaughlin, Paul Masvidal, Chuck Schuldiner, Jeff Loomis, Greg Howe.
Bass: Anthony Jackson, Justin Chancellor, Tetsuo Sakurai , Mariusz Duda.
Vocals: Daniel Gildenlöw, Maynard James Keenan, Thom Yorke, Warrel Dane, Mikael Akerfeldt.
Piano: Hiromi Uehara, Robert Glasper

Can we expect a release from your band(s) any time soon?
Always known as Viru, this man needs no introduction. From Demonic Resurrection to Far Travel Music, Viru is a drummer with versatility, power and a bunch of other drumming skills! He is, without a doubt, one of the best drummers in India This also being one of the best interviews I've done, here's a detailed conversation with Viru! Check it out!

Full name and age.
Virendra Gagan Kaith, 33

What is your favourite dish/cuisine?
Dal rice with papad and achaar. And Indian Chinese food.

Kindly tell us about all your precious gear! (Sticks, cymbals, kit, skins, gear/bags)
I got a Mapex "Pro M" kit
All my drum accessories are also by Mapex
Promark sticks
Zildjian Z3 cymbals, and only my hi hats are K series
Pearl Demon Drive Pedals
American Tourister backpack
Walking shoes from Decathlon which I also use while playing drums, sometimes.

How long have you been playing the drums?
It's broken up into sections. I started playing drums when I was in school and my uncle would set up the whole kit in our living room (joint family vibe). I played a couple of gigs with my uncle where I would support him on the octopad or congas while he would be on the drumkit. Then I properly started playing drums while I was in college, which is in the year 2000. Used to jam with Mithun (Guitarist of PDV) as we were in the same college. But then from 2002 to 2005 I started working in a recording studio called Throatlatch. That is when I was more inclined towards how to record and mix rather than actually playing the drums. But then that experience has helped shaping myself as a drummer. From 2005, I started playing regularly as a drummer and even got to join PDV. And in 2007, I joined Demonic Resurrection. Since then there has been no looking back (Because there's only a backdrop behind me!)

What got you into playing drums?
Music was always being played in my house as my uncle was a professional drummer. We were very encouraged to participate in all these extracurricular activities in school, so that got me excited about rhythms in general. I remember, I used to set and program different grooves on my uncle's Roland SPD-20. Since then, its been a journey of meeting like-minded musicians and friends that got me into playing drums on a professional level.

Have you learned to read music as well, or do you just play by ear?
I would initially practice by listening to songs and figuring out parts. Then, I was also fascinated to learn how to read music, as everything that was available online was in musical language, so I learnt reading music by myself through online content available on the internet. It's a combination of both that has helped me explore more boundaries.

Loud and pounding | soft and accurate | the normal drummer. What do you prefer?
I would ideally prefer a loud and pounding drummer, because I am more inclined towards listening/playing a lot of metal music. However, as a freelance musician, I have learnt that there is so much more in playing different styles that enhances the music as a whole. So you can't go bashing the drumkit at all the gigs. Sometimes, it is more challenging to go a step back and maintain a clarity in your playing, that suddenly gives the music another dimension.

What thought goes into the composing process?
I am actually not someone who can compose something from scratch. But I work as an arranger, where if someone has an idea, I can maybe enhance it with whatever knowledge I have gather. And always, for me, music comes first. I treat the arrangement depending on how the music flows.

What other music projects are you currently a part of?
I will try and name them all:
Demonic Resurrection (Metal)
Scribe (Scribecore)

Varun Sood is a fucking metal drummer and there's no doubt about that! Earlier being drummer of former Delhi band 'Frequency', he now works in Mumbai. Besides his amazing corporate job (lul), he is drummer of Blakc. Having played at Slayer and Metallica tributes in the past, this hard-hitting drummer is an absolute treat to watch, and you can take my word for it. He's one of the tightest drummers I've seen live in recent times. Check this cute interview I did with the Punjabi drummer!

Full name and age.
Varun Sood (aka Punjabidrummer on Youtube), 29.

What is your favourite dish/cuisine?
I guess it’s a close competition between Rajma Chawal and Golgappe (better known as Pani Puri in Mumbai)

Kindly tell us about all your precious gear! (Sticks, cymbals, kit, skins, gear/bags)
I am really gear agnostic as of now since I have broken all my cymbals. So I basically play whatever is available at the venue. However, I do have a faithful Iron Cobra double bass pedal that has been serving me for a good 6 years now.

How long have you been playing the drums?
I think I have just completed 8 years.

What got you into playing drums?
I remember seeing Prestorika, a popular thrash metal band from Delhi playing at my college in 2003, and all I remember is staring at the drummer belting it for an hour. I just knew then that this what I want to learn.

Have you learned to read music as well, or do you just play by ear?
By ear. I have tried to dabble with learning notations but honestly I really suck at it.

Loud and pounding | soft and accurate | the normal drummer. What do you prefer?
Loud and pounding any bloody day of the year!

What thought goes into the composing process?
I have always wanted to be “a band’s drummer”. My job is to get the foundation right and that’s what I try and do with every song. I mostly sit with the bassist and the guitarist to figure out what groove fits the song best.

What other music projects are you currently a part of?
As of now, I play full-time for Blakc. However, I am open to playing sessions (Hullo! Can anyone hear me??)

Do you have a day job? What is it that you do?
Yup. I work as a Financial Analyst for a real estate company.

Your favorite musicians (Indian)
Guitar: Akshay Rajpurohit, Warren Mendonsa, Bruce Lee Mani, Adil Manuel
Bass: Roop Thomas Philip, Ashish Sharma (ex-Frequency)
Drums: Jai Row Kavi, Rahul Hariharan, Viru Kaith, Nishant Hagjer, Gino Banks
Vocals: Sidharth Basrur, Shashank Bhatnagar

Your favourite musicians (international)
Guitar: Steve Vai, Stephen Carpenter (Deftones), Fredrik Thordendal, Dave Mustaine
Bass: Billy Sheehan, Flea, Stuart Zender (Jamiroquai)
Drums: Tomas Haake, Brad Wilk, Lars Ulrich, Abe Cunningham, Dennis Chambers…this list is too long to fit the page
Vocals: James Hetfield, Chris Cornell, Zach de la Rocha, Chino Moreno

Can we expect a release from your band(s) any time soon?
We (Blakc) are working really hard towards our third album and we expect to come out with a new record in 2015.

Whom do you look up to, as a musician and a band?
Too many to list here, but as a musician definitely all my favorite drummers listed above.

A message to all your fans (hello ladies!)
Just a big hug and thank you for supporting me so far. Keep doing the same and I’ll keep drumming forever! :)
One of my oldest friends in the Mumbai metal scene, Mayank Sharma is the metronome behind some really kickass bands, one being one of India's biggest metal bands Zygnema! Playing different styles from power groove/heavy metal in Zygnema to death metal in Atmosfear and some fusion with Agnya, Mayank never fails to come across as one of the tightest and most accurate live drummers we've seen. Working on recording live drums for all of these bands, he is also now going to be an active part of Providence. Here's an interesting interview with Mayank!

Full name and age.
Mayank Sharma, 25

What is your favourite dish/cuisine?
My favorite would be Kheema that my mom makes. We have kheema parties at my place. :P

Kindly tell us about all your precious gear! (Sticks, cymbals, kit, skins, gear/bags)
Vater Drum Sticks, Sabian cymbals. I have a Gladnick (local manufacturer) Custom kit for home practice. I majorly use Evans Heads and a Tama Iron Cobra double-bass pedal.

How long have you been playing the drums?
9 Years

What got you into playing drums?
I got pulled in by Linkin Park. I really enjoyed the grooves that Rob (drummer) played and how different the patterns were in each song. My father, being a drummer who always wanted me to learn drums, forced me into learning instruments. I come from a family of musicians so every one wanted me to learn something and I acted like a rebel as they were all forcing me (WHAT A FOOL I WAS)
When I was in the 11th standard, a guy did a guitar solo performance at the Annual College Programme. He was Shrikant Sreenivasan (Coshish). I went back home and I thought “I have a drum kit, why can't I just start practicing and then call Shrikant over to jam with him?".. and that is how it all began!

Have you learned to read music as well, or do you just play by ear?
I do know to read and write music, but I only approach it when it's needed, but generally I play by ear. If I do not understand a part maybe I would check out its transcripts, but that hardly ever happens.
I started learning the drums on my own and after a year or so I realized that I need to learn the instrument properly from a good teacher and then I found the best set of teachers I could have and got myself enrolled in the classes. Gino Banks, Sandy, Vinayak Pol, Jai Row Kavi. It was compulsory to know to read and write music with the above mentioned teachers.

Loud and pounding | soft and accurate | the normal drummer. What do you prefer?
It's about the type of music that I am playing but my personal favorite is LOUD AND POUNDING!

What thought goes into the composing process?
I am a very groove and accent-oriented person, At times, I try and follow a riff with its own groove and accentuate according to the riff. At times if I feel a different rhythm and groove to a riff or a pattern can go well together, so I just try and apply that. At times it's as easy as something just popping up in your head or you feeling something perfectly fits in and you try it. It is easily executable but then there are times when you think of something and executing it takes days.

What other music projects are you currently a part of?
I am with a Death Metal Band - Atmosfear and a ambient fusion band – Agnya. I am also now helping Providence with the drummer duties.

Do you have a day job? What is it that you do?
Play Drums

Your favorite musicians (Indian)
Guitar: Prashant Shah, Sidharth Kadadi, Charan Singh Pathania, Bruce Mckoy
Bass: Roop Thomas, Sheldon Dsilva, Reuben Bhattacharya, Anish Nair, Leon Quadros
Drums: Gino Banks, Jai Row Kavi, Virendra Kaith, Nishant Hagjer, Tao Issrao, Rahul Hariharan, Hamza Kazi
Vocals:Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy, Jimmy, Siddharth Basrur, Sunneith Revankar

Your favourite musicians (international)
Guitar: Dimebag Darrell, Fredrik Thordendal, Marten Hagstorm, Mark Hosking, Andrew Goddard, Adam Jones, Devin Townsend, Vogg, Mattias IA Eklundh, Wes Borland
Bass: Jon Stockman, Sam Rivers, Dick Lövgren, Justin Chancellor
Drums: Morgan Agren, Thomas Haake, Gene Hoglan, Gavin Harrison, Danny Carey, Benny Greb, Jojo Mayer, Stef Broks, Chris Adler
Vocals: Devin Townsend, Randy Blythe, Phil Anselmo, Max Cavalera, Corey Taylor, Ian Kenny, Maynard James Keenan

Can we expect a release from your band(s) any time soon?
All the bands that I am with are working on albums.
I have already finished the drum tracking for Atmosfear and the bass is also done. After we finish tracking guitars and vocals, it'll be closer to seeing an end product.
Zygnema will be entering the studio in the first week of September to track the drums and follow on.
Agnya might also be entering the studio by mid September or early October to work on the full length album.
So yeah, there's a lot of stuff is happening in a span of two months and I will also be working with Providence on their album.

Whom do you look up to, as a musician and a band?
As a musician I look up to every other musician to gain knowledge from them. Every one teaches you something or the other. I have been learning so much from the drummers around me, like few simple fills and their application, which I might not have thought of. I keep me ears and eyes out to the musicians so that I can learn something new from them. As a drummer, I look up to all my favorite drummers.

A message to all your fans (hello ladies!)
Thank you to every one for the support and for appreciating my work. If you are a musician then keep practicing and you will achieve what you want. If you are not a musician, just enjoy the music and get drunk. And then drink again.
